Uncertainty as Pupils Share Classrooms with Snakes

                          
Rift Valley, Kenya: Salabani Primary in Baringo South is literally a bush school.
In the last two months, pupils have been learning in the bush, dodging snakes and hippos after the school was submerged by water from Lake Baringo.
Each class is assigned a specific tree, which also acts as an anchor to the mobile blackboards.
As the more than 500 pupils compete for shade in the sweltering Baringo heat (currently 36 degrees Celsius) they also have to contend with insects and ants.

Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu Ready To Join 2015 Presidential Elections

Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu has expressed his readiness to take a shot at the Presidency in 2015, if he the people want him to join the race.
The governor spoke yesterday in Minna, the state capital, when he hosted delegates of the Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP), led by its Chairman, Alhaji Balarabe Musa.
Aliyu said: “I always prepare myself for eventuality. I have never declared for anything. I didn’t declare to be governor; I was called upon. So, if my people call upon me, I won’t hesitate to contest.”
The governor cautioned against political intolerance of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at all levels of government to opposition. He noted that a one-party state was undemocratic.
Aliyu maintained that a multiple-party system at any level would encourage healthy competition and enable the people to choose the best to be their leaders.

ASUU STRIKE: ABU Lecturers Want to Revitalise All Universities

Members of Nigeria’s Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria branch, on Thursday, embarked on a peaceful protest to enlighten the public on the strike, by lecturers, now in its 4th month.
The ASUU members trekked about two kilometres in Zaria as part of the protest.
Addressing journalists after the trek, the Chairman of ABU Zaria branch of the union, Dr Mohammed Kabir-Aliyu, said the essence of the protest trek was to enlighten the public on the demands of the lecturers.

One Year After Suntai’s Plane Crash, Acting Governor Prays For Ailing Governor

Taraba State at the weekend marked one year since the crash in Yola, Adamawa State, of a plane being piloted by Governor Danbaba Danfulani Suntai, with the Acting Governor, Alhaji Garba Umar, leading prayers for his speedy recovery.
In a statement obtained by SaharaReporters in Jalingo, the State capital, the Acting Governor who has been in a power struggle with a cabal loyal to Suntai, thanked God for “His amazing grace” upon the life of his son,” the governor.

BOKO HARAM Insurgency: Police Kill 1, Arrest 4 Suspected Sect Members in Bauchi

The police command of Bauchi State has explained how its officers killed a suspected Boko Haram member and nabbed four others in Gadan Maiwa Village, Ningi Local Government Area of the State, on October 29, 2013, Tuesday.

Mr. Muhammed Ladan, the state commissioner of police, revealed this information to the press at his office on October 30, 2013, Wednesday.

According to the CP, the insurgents were arrested around 3 p.m. following a tip-off. One of the suspects was killed, while four others were captured during a gunfight between the police operatives and the hoodlums.

More cans of worms were thrown up  on Wednesday in Abuja  during  the public hearing  by  the House of Representatives Committee on Aviation on the controversial N255m bulletproof cars purchased by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority.
But the woman at the centre of the scandal, Ms Stella Oduah, dared the committee   as she again reneged on her promise to honour an invitation earlier extended to her.
Her absence however  led to  a near  disagreement between the Committee Chairman, Mrs. Nkiruka Onyejeocha, and a member, Jerry Manwe.
Manwe had complained that the committee started proceedings without first clarifying why Oduah, who is the Minister of Aviation,  was absent.
