Match Preview: Chelsea Vs Southampton

Kick Off 5:10pm

Team News

Chelsea
  • Jose Mourinho confirmed in midweek that Samuel Eto'o is suffering from a muscular injury as a result of fatigue, though Fernando Torres is back fit having made his return from the bench in Basel.
  • He will probably lead the line against the Saints and compatriot Juan Mata will be hopeful that, after an awful attacking display without him in Switzerland, he can force his way back into the side.
  • Elsewhere David Luiz has missed the last two games with a minor knee injury and will miss the welcome of Southampton, with Gary Cahill set to deputise on Sunday.
Southampton
  • Dejan Lovren missed the game with Arsenal through injury but should be back in contention to replace Jos Hooiveld at the back.
  • Luke Shaw has overcome the knock he picked up at the Emirates and will keep his place in the starting XI.
  • After an abject display from Rickie Lambert last weekend Dani Osvaldo will hope to come back into the reckoning but changes may be kept to a minimum despite the 2-0 defeat.

Prediction

  • Chelsea may have secured their progression in the Champions League, despite losing in Basel, but their performance was very poor and they will need to raise their game against a Southampton side that have lost just twice this season.
  • The Blues have an identical record after 12 games to that which saw Roberto Di Matteo sacked this time last season and they have been too inconsistent in all areas of the pitch thus far.
  • Nevertheless, at home they are still protecting an incredible unbeaten league record under Mourinho having nicked a point against West Brom before the international break, and this is likely to be another close game.
