Team News

  • Diego Lopez was chosen again by Ancelotti over Iker Casillas for the game with Granada and after keeping a clean sheet there seems no reason to drop him.
  • Alvaro Arbeloa replaced Dani Carvajal, who struggled defensively against Betis, and should retain his place in the team.
  • Sami Khedira is still doubtful due to a knee injury, while Asier Illarramendi has not yet reached full fitness.
  • Luka Modric was the only holding midfielder against Granada, but another option is Casemiro, who is better suited to the role than the Croatian. Whether Modric retains his place in the position depends on how dangerous Ancelotti believes the Athletic midfield to be.
Athletic Bilbao
  • Number one goalkeeper Iraizoz is still injured, meaning Iago Herrerin, who kept a clean sheet in his debut against Osasuna, keeps his place in the team.
  • Ander Herrera is the subject of a bid from Manchester United, but that should not prevent him from playing against Madrid.
  • Mikel San José and Borja Ekiza will both sit out the trip to the Bernabeu through injury.

Prediction

  • Despite taking maximum points in both games, Madrid have failed to convince, winning both matches by a single goal.
  • Athletic have also won both their matches and look far more solid than they did at this stage last season.
  • However, the Basque outfit have not won at the Bernabeu for nine seasons, but the last time they took all three points from the Madrid capital, Ernesto Valverde was their coach.
  • Against an attractive but sturdy Athletic lead by Valverde, the architect of the club's last victory at the Bernabeu, Madrid will not expect a similar scoreline to the 5-1 they achieved in this fixture last season, but will still be confident of winning their third game of the season.
Prediction:
