The Presidential Implementation Committee on the Needs Assessment for Nigeria Universities headed by the Governor of Benue State, Gabriel Suswam, has set up another team saddled with the responsibility of prioritising the immediate needs of universities in the country.
A statement by the assistant director, Information, in the Benue State Liaison Office in Abuja, Orduen Dura, and made available to LEADERSHIP yesterday, said the new team would identify priority needs of universities in different geo-political zones for commencement of infrastructural development for immediate flag-off by President Goodluck Jonathan.
The team is headed by the TETFUND executive secretary with its membership drawn from the National Universities Commission (NUC), National Planning Commission (NPC), Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), USPF, FMC and NITDA, while the principal secretary to Governor Suswam is to serve as the secretary.
Terms of reference of the team include hostels, classrooms/lecture theatres, laboratoriesn and equipment supply among other related projects. The aim is to reposition the university system in Nigeria to compete favourably with others in the world.
The Governor Suswam-led committee is an intervention body as a result of the prolonged ASUU strike which has crippled the universities nationwide. The sub-committee, which is to prioritise the needs within the initial fund of N100bn, is to report back to the main committee on August 11, 2013.
