Now the league has revealed that J.R. will be suspended five games next season for testing positive for a banned substance.
New York Knicks guard J.R. Smith – the NBA's reigning Sixth Man of the Year – will be suspended for a violation of the league's substance abuse policy, league sources told Yahoo Sports. When a player tests positive and they are given the five game suspension it is usually indicative of testing positing for marijuana, as stronger substances usually warrant a longer suspension.
The suspension is expected to be for five games, a source told Yahoo Sports.
The Knicks’ reserve wing player will also be injured to start the season as he recently underwent knee surgery that will sideline him 12-16 weeks.
