Michael Essien’s return to the Ghanaian national team after two
years of absence has been a welcomed development for many in the
country.
But the Chelsea FC player’s return to Accra on Sunday for
preparations for the ‘Black Stars’s’ final 2014 World Cup qualifying
match against Zambia was met with the unfortunate news of his dad’s
passing on.
James, died in the night and Michael has since confirmed the news on
his Twitter account, saying: “It is difficult, but God always does
things well. Thank you for support. Rest in Peace Father.”
The 30-year-old midfielder however participated in a light session of the team’s opening training at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The coach Akwasi Appiah’s team is expected to continue with their preparations for Friday’s decisive match on Tuesday morning.
